Joe, The Motorists' Friend Tee
Joseph R. Stine spent eight years as automobile editor of the Patriot and Evening News newspapers in Harrisburg “and in that capacity came into intimate contact with all branches of the automotive field. For the last year he has been actively engaged in the retailing of auto supplies,” according to The Evening News in Harrisburg.
Joe, the Motorists’ Friend debuted on March 16, 1928 at 9 S. Market Square, Harrisburg, billed as a “cut rate auto accessory, tire and radio store.” The company became synonymous with children visiting Santa at Christmas, in its stores and on local TV.
Joe, the Motorists’ Friend flourished for decades, expanding to Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia, before succumbing to a changing retail environment and closing its remaining stores in 1981.
